I see a lot of small businesses, especially "mommy bloggers" who use hosting services, such as Blogger, to deliver their content to their customers.
While I don't believe there's anything inherently wrong with the concept, and I love the easiness of starting a blog, I do believe there are two important reasons you need to move your content from these sites.
First, paying someone to host your website means you'll always retain the rights to your materials. Google, and the Blogger platform, do a decent job of assuring they're not trying to do anything evil by stating that you own all rights to the content on your blog. I get that. Still, I'm a little concerned with the reality that at any given moment your content and any rights could vanish. I realize the same possibility exists with a "self-hosted" site, but there are precautions you can take to prevent or minimize such incidents. I always like the creed, "my content is my content," and not the other way around.
The second factor is hosting your own site, and thereby purchasing an associated domain name, provides some professionalism or "street cred" to your business. You probably question your vendors' stability or professionalism when they present a www.companyx.somefreewebhostingservice.com, and you'd better believe their questioning yours too. The same principle applies to email addresses you're putting on your business cards. You can have a professionally designed website for cheaper than you think. Heck, if you decide not to pursue it any further, at least spend the $10 per year and purchase your domain and direct your web traffic there.
