I often wonder just how much land the federal government owns. Growing up in California, I always perceived that there were quite a lot of national parks, forests, and wildlife refuges. As it turns out, my perceptions weren’t too far off.
Via strangemaps, we get a breakdown of the percentage of land owned by the federal government. I’m shocked that the government, and thus the American taxpayer, own so much land in Nevada. However, I’m sure none of the land is on "The Strip." No offense to Nevandans (my mom’s from there), but 90% of the state is barren and worthless. I do wonder if that’s the reason the government is also dumping all nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain.
I think as quasi-owners, we need to do more on our lands. Get out there and use it. So, here’s a list of Oklahoma’s national parks, forests, recreation areas, and what-not for you to enjoy:
- Chickasaw National Recreation Area
- Oklahoma City National Memorial
- Washita Battlefield National Historic Site
- Trail of Tears National Historic Trail
- Sante Fe National Historic Trail
